Into the Sparkly Heart of an Internet Font War

Slate

Vivian Dye is a smart woman. And so it took less than six months of selling customized golf merchandise on Zazzle, the most prominent online marketplace with three Zs in its name, for her to figure out that she needed an "Elizabeth Taylor on the beach." "I call it'Elizabeth Taylor on the beach' because she used to attract men for a cousin of hers," said Dye, referring to a plotline from an old movie. Even if customers didn't fancy her Liz, a monogrammed golfball covered with rose-colored sparkles drew users to her store, where she offered them customized pickleball paddles, shower curtains, and other golf balls. "I'm the golf ball queen," says Dye, who started selling on Zazzle in 2021, soon after retiring from her job in the mortgage industry.

It's IFA 2019, and that can only mean one thing: Gadgets abound for an entire week straight. LG, as it's apt to do, introduced an incrementally refined phone in the LG G8X (the successor to the LG G8). But the accessory the Seoul company unveiled alongside it is arguably more interesting: an updated version of its snap-on Dual Screen product that improves upon the original in several respects. Pricing has yet to be announced for the G8X and revamped Dual Screen, but we'll keep our eyes peeled for more details. LG anticipates both will ship in Q4.

Pixel 3 Review: A Phone Made Better with AI

#artificialintelligence

Google debuted the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with dual front-facing cameras and glass body last week, and while there are notable hardware improvements, it's things like being able to screen calls with your own conversational AI or make reservations with Duplex that make the latest Pixel stand out. Many of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL's best features, whether it's a predictive battery or a camera with Portrait Mode that scans business cards and helps you choose your best pictures, are made better with AI. Pixel 3 phones start shipping Thursday. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are the first in Google's Pixel series to ditch aluminum for glass, which enables support for wireless charging -- also a first. It's a bit deceptive; the bottom portion of the rear cover has a matte coating, giving them the two-tone aesthetic characteristic of their predecessors.

The Pixel 3's coolest features have nothing to do with the phone

#artificialintelligence

Interfaces and hardware shaped the last decade of smartphone innovation, but artificial intelligence will shape the next decade. Nowhere is that more obvious than in Google's new Pixel 3 smartphones, announced today at an event in New York. The new devices use AI to do everything from answer your phone for you to taking clear photos in the dark of night. With all respect to the industrial design, the Pixel 3's hardware update is fairly typical. The phone is getting faster guts, the dreaded front notch, wireless charging capabilities, a lol-worthy "not pink" millennial pink option, and 5.5-inch and 6.3-inch sizes that start at $799.

The future of big data and AI boils down to one thing

#artificialintelligence

When I started my first business in the mid-90's I did what most first-time entrepreneurs do -- I ordered business cards. Actually, I first had to get an address and order a phone. Then it was setting up an accounting system, doing the legal paperwork, building a website, and, of course, writing a really long business plan. I did everything except the things I should have been doing: telling my story and selling my solution. But as is so often the case, I got too caught up in the mechanics and lost sight of my purpose.

Microsoft Pix captures better pictures of people, and now whiteboards too

#artificialintelligence

From the outset, Microsoft Pix has used artificial intelligence to help people more easily capture better pictures of family and friends with an iPhone. Now, you can use the smartphone camera app to take better pictures of documents, whiteboards and business cards, too. Because, let's face it, we all use our cameras to take photos of more than just people and places. "We have data that shows people are taking a lot of whiteboard photos at work, they are doing a lot of document scanning," said Josh Weisberg, a principal program manager in the Computational Photography Group within Microsoft's research organization in Redmond, Washington. Based on the app data and customer feedback, Weisberg's team released an update on Thursday to Microsoft Pix that includes enhanced deep-learning capabilities around image understanding to address several productivity scenarios. The update is available for download via iTunes.
